The Bertha Abess Children's Center, Inc. is a nationally acclaimed, accredited, nonprofit charitable corporation, governed by a Board of Trustees composed of community leaders who have demonstrated an interest in children's mental health.
The Center is committed to providing mental health and psychoeducational programs and services that adhere to the highest professional standards for children and adolescents with emotional and bahavioral disabilities and those at risk for mental health problems. The Bertha Abess Children's Center is distinctive in being accredited by both the Council on Accreditation and the Association of Independent Schools of Florida.
The Center plays an active role in the development of a strong, multidisciplinary, professional community dedicated to meeting the needs of these special children and adolescents in Miami-Dade County. The Bertha Abess Children's Center has developed partnerships with a range of organizations and institutions, including: the Department of Children and Families, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Children's Trust, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and the Mailman Center for Child Development, the Public Health Trust, Miami-Dade County Department of Human Services, and Health Foundation of South Florida. The Center's cooperative agreements are featured in the U.S. Dept of Education's Guidebook as outstanding examples of public and private partnerships for excellence in the education and treatment of children with serious emotional problems.
